At East Barnet Village Dental Practice, we place great emphasis on preventative care because the better you take care of your teeth, the fewer issues you will experience.
Dental disease is almost entirely preventable, and your oral health is as important as your overall wellness. Untreated dental disease can lead to complications such as infection, damage to the dental pulp and jawbone and eventually tooth loss. A dental infection can spread to other parts of the body and is linked to heart disease and diabetes.
What is preventive dentistry?
Preventative dentistry begins with your at-home oral hygiene routine. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing once a day, eating a balanced diet and limiting between-meal snacks can help your teeth last a lifetime!
Biannual dental exams and professional cleanings are also essential to preventative care for your oral health. Your hygienist and dentist can assess your dental health at these visits and identify and recommend a treatment plan before problems become more complicated and costly.
Mouth cancer screenings, x-rays, sealants, mouthguards and niteguards may also be part of your preventative dental care depending on your specific needs.
How often should I see a dentist?
Once every 6 months is good for most patients, however people with special conditions like advanced gum disease may need to visit their dentist more frequently.
What does preventive dentistry detect?
At a regular check-up, your dentist will look for signs of tooth decay and gum disease as well as factors that can lead to dental diseases such as dry mouth and oral cancer.
